December 21, 2005 Re: Pre-Chapter Committees Dearest Delegates, Congratulations for being elected as Delegates to the XIII General Chapter. It is indeed a great honor to be a member of the Chapter, but it is also a heavy burden! You know well that your task doesn't consist only of going to the Chapter in order to elect the Superior General and the Council. Rather, it is your duty to prepare the Chapter in a way that this may produce fruits of renewal, conversion and growth, which are really needed. I ask you to intensify your prayer life, to dedicate yourself more seriously to religious observance and to share more generously your time, your talents and even, with what you have, your treasure, in order to give greater credibility to your task as Delegate. The Special Committee, that has prepared the synthesis of the questionnaires compiled by the confreres, has rendered an excellent service to you, to me and to the whole Congregation; the result of their work seems very efficient and exhaustive, so much so that I deem it necessary to make it known to all confreres. And now, it is up to you and the other delegates to construct on this initial job, to develop the topic assigned to you to be studied. Really it seems that the whole Congregation awaits more light on the charism, on its incisiveness, its applicability and possible new forms of its implementation. What is done or can be done in one country may be a source of inspiration for others. As Delegate, in force of your election and in virtue of holy obedience, you have a grave responsibility to take seriously your assignment to a committee, to give and to do the best you can for the good of the Congregation. According to the General Program for 2006, every Committee should have at least four meetings. With the agreement of all members, the dates can be changed and even the number of meetings can be augmented; but the study cannot be completed if there are less than four meetings. Anyone who, without serious reasons, recognized as such by the president of the committee, fails to participate to more than one meeting, risks seriously the effectiveness and the credibility of his participation in the Chapter itself. The completed work of every committee will have to be “long enough to cover the essentials and brief enough to be interesting”. It is advisable that the reports be impregnated with "Roman practicality." According to my indications of April 27, 2005, the Committee will have to deliver the complete work to the office of the secretary general, on paper and on diskette, before May 30. Every Committee will appoint a secretary who, aside from being responsible of editing the work of the committee, will also prepare summary minutes of every meeting. Every committee should start it work by studying the report of the Special Committee, and may seek the assistance of other confreres who are not delegates and of experts in a particular field of interest. The president of the committee or another member of the committee will read the report before the Chapter assembly itself. To the 8 Pre-Chapter Committees, 4 Groups of Study are added for those countries which have less than 3 delegates. The groups of study will follow the same indications given to Committees. |
